N727RT Progress Summary:  Nov 2005  .

BUILDER ASSIST(continued):  Overall, the builders assist time was a great jump start to the project.  Additionally, being able to meet and work with the Lancair staff personally has proved valuable even after I returned home.  During the five weeks, I accomplished:

  • Extending the fuel tanks two more bays (approx 18 extra gals+/- on each side)
  • Adding a second electrical conduit behind the main spar
  • Adding an additional fluid tank (TKS fluid or fuel) behind the main spar (approx 12 gals each side)
  • Adding speed brake pockets, an embedded nav antenna, and an AOA port.
  • Initial fabrication of the aileron push/pull controls tubes
  • Completing and closing the wings
  • Completing and closing the Horizontal Stabilizer
  • Completing and closing the Elevator (with counterweights installed)
  • Installing the windows in the upper fuselage shell
  • Installing the door in the upper fuselage shell
  • Installing/mating the wings into the fuselage (they were previously pre-fit)
  • Installing the upper wing fairings (with an embedded fore-aft electrical conduit)
  • Installing the front 1/2 of the lower wing fairings

It is perhaps possible to accomplish more than this in five weeks (without the modifications), but I was comfortable working at this pace, and stopping to check/review my work along the way.

THE TRIP HOME:  While at Redmond, I located a used flat bed trailer with stake pockets and added wooden side panels, to trailer the kit home (behind the Jeep).  Ideally, you'd need a 20-22 foot trailer, but I could only find a deal on an 18' so I made the sides to overhang 3-4 foot (the wings are each 19+ feet long)

The cross-country trip home was a great adventure itself (with no real issues).
